A deep, extensive root system helps cool-season grasses build up reserves to get through the winter, green up top growth in spring, and minimize vulnerability to insects, diseases and summer drought. Nutrients released from the soil, grass clippings and late season fertilization will promote root growth.

Creating a lush, vibrant lawn takes commitment, but the rewards of a successful grass seed project are worth the time and resources you invest. A beautiful lawn can improve your home’s value, benefit the environment and enhance your family’s quality of life.

Know how your property and choosing the right grass can protect water quality:

  1. Selecting a grass appropriate to your site will lead to rapid establishment, preventing runoff and erosion from bare areas.
  2. Appropriate grasses will form a dense stand of turf better able to fight off disease and weed encroachment.
  3. A vigorous lawn will require less pesticide input, reducing the potential for polluted runoff, leaching into groundwater, and accidental spills.

Weed Control:

What is a weed? Simple definition – It’s anything growing where you don’t want it to be

Basically, there are two kinds of chemicals to control your weeds and unwanted grasses:

  • Pre-emergent herbicides
  • Post-emergent herbicides

Pre-emergents are designed to prevent weed seeds from germinating. One example of this type is called Tenacity

Post-emergents are designed to kill weeds and unwanted grasses that are already growing or are grown. Examples of these are Trimec (selective) or RoundUp (non selective)

We carry a vast line of commercial grade herbicides that YOU yourself can use and get that quality weed free lawn!

Fungus Control:

Use a fungicide as a preventative tool will save you money, time and maybe your lawn!

Fungicides (which destroy fungus) were invented to prevent certain fungi from attacking plants. Once you have a fungus problem, fungicides must be applied at higher rates and often have to be applied more than once at the high rate.

This year, beat the problem to the punch by applying your fungicide just before lawn problems begin. One of the best fungicides to use Headway Granular. One of the best times to use this is when you make your first yearly application of fertilizer, especially weed and feed products or others with high nitrogen content. Since grasses are most vulnerable as they are being pushed by nitrogen, this is a perfect time to use Headway G at preventative rates.

Also Available:

Practices To Minimize Disease

  • Use alternatives to grass in shady areas
  • Apply a preventative fungicide
  • Avoid excess nitrogen – when nitrogen is needed, focus on late season feeding
  • Limit leaf blade wetness by limiting watering to the morning and to achieve no more than 1 inch per week
  • Choose disease resistant cool-season grass
